China Stocks Mixed, Headed for Weekly Losses

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.3% to 3,891 on Friday, while the Shenzhen Component rose 0.3% to 14,021, as investors remained on the sidelines amid a lack of fresh market catalysts. Attention is now turning to the National People’s Congress Standing Committee meeting in Beijing on August 25–28, where investors hope for additional policy guidance following a string of weak economic data reported for July. On the corporate front, Hua Hong Semiconductor, Kingboard Laminates, and Zijin Gold International are set to be added to the Hang Seng Index as it expands the benchmark to 100 constituents from 93 in an effort to improve market representation and sector balance. Financial stocks weighed on the market, with Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (-0.4%), Agricultural Bank of China (-0.3%), and China Construction Bank (-0.2%) declining. In contrast, CATL (0.6%), Eoptolink Technology (1.7%), and Sungrow Power Supply (1%) gained. For the week, both benchmarks are on track to post losses.
