Japanese Shares Jump on Tech Boost

The Nikkei 225 Index jumped 2% to above 66,300 while the broader Topix Index gained 0.8% to 4,136 on Monday, with Japanese shares advancing for a second straight session as technology and artificial intelligence-linked stocks outperformed. The gains came as US chipmakers and memory stocks rallied on Friday amid improving sentiment toward the sector, although the broader market remained pressured by stronger-than-expected US jobs data that boosted expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. Markets also priced in a rate increase from the Bank of Japan at its September meeting as the country continues to grapple with persistent inflation and a weak yen. Top tech gainers included Kioxia Holdings (7.2%), SoftBank Group (6.1%), Advantest (2.6%), Fujikura (5.9%) and Tokyo Electron (5.3%). Meanwhile, financial and consumer stocks underperformed, with losses from Mitsubishi UFJ (-0.9%) and Nintendo (-2.2%).
