Are Geopolitical Sentiments Shifting Again? European Stocks Await CPI

The main European stock market indices have opened calmly today and are trading close to their benchmark levels, consolidating around their all-time highs. The low volatility in the equity and futures markets is due to the fact that investors are holding off on larger trades ahead of key macroeconomic data releases. The main factor driving market sentiment today is the release, scheduled for this afternoon, of the US CPI inflation report for July. This figure will be of fundamental importance to investors, as it will help shape expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision at its September meeting. Meanwhile, on the commodities markets, Brent crude oil continues to rise, climbing to around US$89.57 per barrel in the wake of attacks on ships in the Middle East and as hopes of a de-escalation of the conflict fade. Meanwhile, the US dollar remains relatively stable, with contracts on the dollar index (USDIDX) showing only minimal, fractional changes this morning.

Turning to the stock markets in Europe, the defence and energy sectors are performing best, gaining ground due to heightened geopolitical risks and rising oil prices, respectively. At the other end of the spectrum today are the luxury goods, healthcare and automotive sectors, which are performing the worst and dragging the broader market down. Company information:

- Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has seen its share price rise by over 18% after raising its full-year profit margin forecast and reporting an adjusted operating profit for the second quarter that significantly exceeded market expectations.
- Shares in the naval shipbuilder TKMS are up 9.2 per cent following the second upward revision of its annual financial forecasts in just six months.
- Meanwhile, shares in the European travel giant TUI are down 2.8 per cent, as its operating profit fell short of expectations due to weaker bookings and higher aviation fuel costs.
- Sentiment in the global technology sector is being boosted significantly by AI infrastructure firms such as CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer, which are posting strong gains ahead of the US market open following the announcement of excellent financial forecasts for the coming years.
- Meanwhile, the German chemicals group Covestro has declared a force majeure for some of its products due to record-low water levels on the Rhine, which are paralysing transport and disrupting supply chains for industry.
