British Pound: Higher bar for further gains against US Dollar – OCBC

OCBC strategists Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong note that the British Pound (GBP) is underpinned by fiscal discipline, resilient United Kingdom (UK) growth and improved political stability, with the latest Budget preserving headroom under fiscal rules. However, markets already discount an aggressive Bank of England (BoE) tightening path into 2027, so additional GBP upside now requires supportive data and BoE delivery, raising the bar for the next leg higher.

Supportive backdrop but priced tightening

“GBP has held up better than expected despite the fiscal strain from higher energy costs. Crucially, the Budget avoided adding to those concerns. It stayed within the fiscal rules and preserved GBP15bn of headroom against the stability rule, even after absorbing some of the impact from the Middle East conflict.”

“The broader UK backdrop also remains relatively supportive. Growth has proved resilient, with the OBR upgrading its 2026 growth forecast to 1.2%. Greater political stability and fiscal discipline should continue to offer GBP some relative support, while closer UK-EU economic ties could provide an additional medium-term tailwind.”

“But the easy gains may be behind us. Markets are already pricing an aggressive Bank of England tightening cycle, with a November hike heavily discounted and substantially more tightening priced into 2027. With plenty of tightening already in the price, the bar for the next leg higher in GBP is getting increasingly high.”
