Chinese Stocks Fall on Geopolitical Jitters, AI Weakness

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.4% to 3,951 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component declined 0.5% to 14,249, as investor sentiment weakened amid fading optimism over a near-term easing of US-Iran tensions. Market caution intensified after US President Donald Trump demanded that Iran compensate victims of conflicts involving Tehran, while Iranian officials sought reparations for damage caused by recent US and Israeli strikes. The renewed diplomatic impasse dampened expectations for a swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns that disruptions to shipping through the waterway could persist and continue to weigh on global risk appetite. Market sentiment was also pressured by renewed selling in AI-related stocks, as investors rotated into more defensive sectors amid increasing volatility in the AI trade. Leading declines included Zhongji Innolight (-6.0%), Eoptolink Technology (-5.1%), Cambricon Technologies (-2.1%), Hygon Information Technology (-1.6%), and SMIC (-1.1%).
