US Natural Gas Price Forecast: Mild Weather and Rising Production Keep Futures Under Pressure

US natural gas prices remain under pressure at $2.59 per MMBtu, following a two-year low in the previous session. Forecasts for warmer-than-normal weather across much of the eastern United States are weakening heating-demand expectations, while rising production is adding to supply concerns. However, stronger liquefied natural gas (LNG) export flows are helping cushion further losses.

Market Snapshot

Current Natural Gas Price Action

Natural gas futures are struggling to recover as mild weather forecasts reduce expectations for heating demand. Above-normal temperatures are expected across the eastern two-thirds of the United States through November 9, reinforcing concerns that a potential Super El Niño could produce a warmer winter and limit seasonal gas consumption.

Prices have also faced pressure from elevated production levels. Output across the Lower 48 states averaged approximately 113.3 bcfd over the past week, although monthly production so far remains below the record level recorded in August and September.

Supply Outlook: Production Remains Elevated

Strong domestic production is a significant bearish factor for natural gas prices. Recent output has reached approximately 113.3 bcfd, increasing the amount of supply available to the market.

Monthly production averaging 111.9 bcfd remains below the August and September record of 113.3 bcfd. Whether output continues to approach or exceed previous highs will be important in determining the extent of supply pressure heading into winter.

Demand Outlook: Weather and LNG Exports in Focus

Warmer weather is weakening expectations for residential and commercial heating demand during a period when consumption would typically begin increasing seasonally.

However, LNG exports are providing an important source of demand. Average feedgas flows to the nine major US LNG export terminals increased to 18.3 bcfd in October to date, up from 17.9 bcfd in September. Continued growth in export demand could help absorb domestic supply and limit further price declines.

Bullish Sentiment

  1. Rising LNG demand: Feedgas flows have increased compared with September, supporting domestic consumption.
  2. Production below recent records: Monthly output remains below the record levels seen in August and September.
  3. Winter demand potential: A change towards colder weather could quickly improve heating-demand expectations.

Bearish Sentiment

  1. Warmer weather forecasts: Above-normal temperatures through November 9 could delay seasonal demand growth.
  2. Potential Super El Niño: Expectations of a warmer winter are weighing on heating-demand prospects.
  3. Elevated production: Recent output near 113.3 bcfd increases supply pressure.
  4. Weak price momentum: Natural gas has recently touched a two-year low, highlighting the market’s vulnerability to further selling.

Natural Gas Price Forecast: What Traders Are Watching

The near-term outlook remains bearish while warmer weather and strong production outweigh improving LNG export demand. Traders will monitor updated temperature forecasts, daily production estimates and LNG feedgas flows to assess whether the market is facing a prolonged period of oversupply.

A shift towards colder weather or a further increase in LNG exports could support a recovery. Conversely, continued mild conditions combined with elevated production could keep prices under pressure.

Market Outlook for the Coming Sessions

US natural gas prices are likely to remain sensitive to weather revisions and production trends. LNG exports are providing a degree of support, but the market may struggle to sustain a rebound until heating-demand expectations improve or supply growth moderates.

Currency Hedger View

Natural gas price volatility can affect energy importers, industrial consumers and businesses with international purchasing commitments. For companies paying suppliers in foreign currencies, exchange-rate movements can compound changes in energy costs.
