China Import Growth Below Estimates

China’s imports jumped 28.2% year-on-year to USD 282.4 billion in August 2026, accelerating from a 27.5% increase in the prior month and extending double-digit growth for an eighth consecutive month. However, the latest reading fell short of market expectations for a 30% rise. In January–August, imports increased 27.0% from the same period in 2025 to USD 2.11 trillion. In July, authorities pledged faster fiscal support and timely monetary easing but offered no concrete measures to boost household consumption. Meanwhile, the Beijing-Washington trade truce has held despite intermittent frictions, with both sides exploring reciprocal tariff cuts on USD 30 billion of goods as they prepare for another summit later this month.
