China Stocks Mixed as Trade Data Looms

The Shanghai Composite rose 0.3% to 3,945 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component fell 0.3% to 13,731, delivering a mixed performance as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of China’s trade data due later in the day. Exports are expected to accelerate to 25% year-on-year in August from 23.9% in July, while import growth is forecast to increase to 30% from 27.5%. Risk appetite was further tempered by renewed geopolitical frictions after Beijing announced preliminary anti-dumping measures on Japanese imports of a chemical used in semiconductor production. The latest move adds to a series of retaliatory actions linked to the ongoing Taiwan-related dispute between China and Japan. Notable gainers included Zijin Mining Group (2.8%), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (1.1%), and China CITIC Bank (1.3%). In contrast, CATL (-2.6%), Weichai Power (-2.3%), and Muyuan Foods Group (-1.3%) declined.
