China Stocks Open Week Lower

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.5% to 3,931 on Monday, while the Shenzhen Component lost 1% to 13,810, as weak economic data reinforced concerns about China’s growth outlook. Official PMI figures showed the Composite PMI edged up to 49.5 in August from 49.3 in July but remained in contraction territory, with both manufacturing (49.8) and non-manufacturing activity (49.0) continuing to shrink. The data added to signs of a broader loss of economic momentum after industrial profit growth slowed to 17.6% year-on-year in the first seven months of 2026 from 18.7% in January–June. Recent readings on fixed-asset investment, industrial production, and retail sales also fell short of expectations, bolstering bets that Beijing will roll out additional policy support. Among the biggest decliners were Foxconn Industrial Internet (-2.3%), Zijin Mining (-5.6%), CATL (-0.9%), Zhongji Innolight (-1.6%), and BYD (-1.2%).
