Venezuela’s capital Caracas reports multiple explosions, low-flying planes

In the early hours of Saturday (around 2 am local time), multiple loud explosions were heard across the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, accompanied by reports from residents of low-flying aircraft overhead, triggering alarm, confusion, and a wide array of unverified social media claims of airstrikes and military action.

According to the Associated Press, at least seven explosions were heard in Caracas in the early morning, and residents in several neighborhoods reportedly rushed into the streets as a result of the disturbances. Venezuelan authorities had not issued an immediate official explanation or confirmation of the cause of the events at the time of the report.

Reuters similarly cited eyewitnesses reporting loud noises throughout the city, and noted that parts of southern Caracas experienced a power outage, including areas near a major military base, though the cause of both the explosions and the blackout remained unclear in the initial reporting.
