Euro Under Pressure as Dollar Strengthens Ahead of Crucial Fed Decision

Today Markets Analysis: The Euro remains under pressure against the US Dollar, with EUR/USD trading below 1.1550 for a fourth consecutive session as investors await Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision. Rising US rate expectations, elevated Treasury yields and renewed geopolitical tensions are combining to support the Dollar, leaving the Euro struggling to regain momentum.
EUR/USD was trading around 1.1540–1.1550 in early Asian trading, close to a one-month low.
Dollar Strength Keeps EUR/USD on the Defensive
The US Dollar has maintained its bullish momentum as markets prepare for the Federal Reserve’s policy decision.
Expectations for a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike have strengthened following recent US inflation data, while higher energy prices are adding to concerns that inflation could remain persistent.
That combination has pushed US Treasury yields higher.
The 10-year Treasury yield is approaching 5%, a level that could become increasingly important for global currency markets.
Higher US yields generally increase the relative attractiveness of Dollar-denominated assets, particularly when European rates are not rising at the same pace.
US Yields and Oil Create a Difficult Combination for the Euro
The rise in oil prices is creating an additional complication.
Continued instability around the Middle East, including tensions involving Iran, Yemen and the Strait of Hormuz, has kept a geopolitical risk premium embedded in energy markets.
Higher oil prices can reinforce US inflation expectations and potentially make the Federal Reserve more cautious about easing monetary conditions later.
At the same time, the Dollar benefits from its traditional safe-haven status when geopolitical risk rises.
This gives the greenback two sources of support: relative interest rates and risk aversion.
ECB Expectations Could Limit the Euro’s Downside
The Euro is not without fundamental support.
A relatively hawkish European Central Bank outlook could help limit the downside in EUR/USD, particularly if European yields remain supported.
That creates an important counterweight to the current Dollar strength.
If the Fed delivers the expected hike but signals that the tightening cycle is approaching its limits, traders could begin reducing long-Dollar positions.
The reaction to Wednesday’s press conference could therefore be more important than the rate decision itself.
EUR/USD Technical Levels Come Into Focus
The technical picture remains bearish while EUR/USD trades below its major moving averages.
A particularly important level is the 1.1533 area, corresponding to the 50% Fibonacci retracement of the latest major swing.
A decisive break below this level would strengthen the bearish setup.
| EUR/USD Level | Significance |
|---|---|
| ~1.1540–1.1550 | Current trading area |
| 1.1533 | 50% Fibonacci support |
| 1.1491 | 61.8% Fibonacci support |
| 1.1430 | 78.6% Fibonacci support |
| 1.1353 | Previous swing-low area |
| 1.1555 | 100-day SMA / first resistance |
| 1.1575 | 38.2% Fibonacci resistance |
| 1.1628–1.1633 | Major resistance / 200-day SMA |
A sustained move below 1.1533 could expose 1.1491 next, followed by 1.1430.
On the upside, EUR/USD would first need to reclaim 1.1555 and then 1.1575. The much more significant barrier sits around 1.1628–1.1633, where the 23.6% retracement and 200-day moving average converge.
Currency Hedger View
For European businesses, the current environment creates a particularly important EUR/USD hedging consideration.
A stronger Dollar increases the cost of USD-denominated imports, technology services, commodities and other international payments for Euro-based companies.
At the same time, European exporters receiving revenues in Dollars may benefit from the current exchange-rate environment, although the benefit can change rapidly if the Fed delivers a less hawkish message than expected.
The critical issue for corporates is therefore not simply predicting the next EUR/USD move. It is managing the range of possible outcomes around major central-bank events.
Currency Hedger View: The 1.1533 technical level is increasingly important for Euro-based companies with Dollar exposure. A clean break lower could signal another leg of Dollar strength, while a Fed disappointment could produce a rapid EUR/USD recovery.

What Traders Are Watching Next
Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision dominates the short-term outlook.
Markets will be watching:
- The Fed rate decision
- FOMC vote split
- Updated economic projections
- US inflation expectations
- 10-year Treasury yield around 5%
- Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s guidance
- Oil prices and Middle East developments
- EUR/USD around 1.1533
The key question is whether the Fed validates current expectations for continued restrictive policy or signals that Wednesday’s move could be closer to the end of the tightening cycle.
Today Markets View
EUR/USD is currently caught between two opposing forces.
The US Dollar has the advantage of higher yields, stronger rate expectations and safe-haven demand, while the Euro retains some support from the ECB’s relatively firm policy stance.
For now, the technical and fundamental picture remains tilted toward the Dollar.
The 1.1533 level is the immediate test. A decisive break could expose 1.1491 and potentially 1.1430, while a recovery above 1.1575 would begin to weaken the bearish structure.
Louis Roche, Analyst, Today Markets: “The Fed decision is already heavily anticipated, so the real EUR/USD catalyst will be the message behind the decision. If US yields remain elevated and the Fed keeps markets focused on inflation, the Dollar has room to extend its advantage.”
Bottom Line
The Euro remains under pressure below 1.1550 as traders position for Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision.
Higher US Treasury yields, persistent inflation concerns, elevated oil prices and geopolitical risk are currently giving the Dollar a powerful combination of support.
EUR/USD now faces a critical technical test at 1.1533. A break below that level would reinforce the bearish outlook, while a dovish Fed could give the Euro a significant relief rally.
For businesses with EUR/USD exposure, the next few sessions could therefore be particularly important for currency-risk management and hedging decisions.
