Hong Kong Stocks Fall to 8-Week Low

The Hang Seng Index fell 0.5%, or 118 points, to 24,687 on Monday, extending losses for a fourth straight session as investors remained cautious amid renewed concerns over higher oil prices and the outlook for global interest rates. The decline came as renewed Middle East tensions pushed crude prices higher, raising concerns over inflation and the possibility of tighter monetary policy. Technology stocks led the decline, with Z.AI Co. plunging 7.1%, despite recently raising around US$5 billion through a Hong Kong share placement and convertible bonds. Optical-communications equipment maker Ligent Technologies is also targeting a Hong Kong IPO of about US$723 million to support its AI-related expansion. Investors are also watching key economic activity data from China due later this week. Other notable laggards included MiniMax (-4.5%), Kingboard Laminates (-4.4%), SMIC (-2.3%), AIA (-1.9%) and Meituan (-0.5%).
