Chinese Stocks Extend Gains

The Shanghai Composite rose 0.5% to 3,842 on Wednesday, while the Shenzhen Component also gained 0.5% to 13,948, extending gains from the previous session as hopes grew for an interim agreement between Washington and Tehran. Qatar said on Tuesday that a proposal had been prepared, while both sides signaled progress in talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Middle East tensions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz sparked an energy supply shock that lifted China out of a three-year deflationary spell, boosting producer and export prices before the reflationary impulse later moderated. On the economic front, a private survey showed that China’s Composite PMI fell to a one-year low of 50.8 in July, with the manufacturing PMI slipping to a four-month low of 50.9 and the services PMI easing to a near two-year low of 50.4. Notable gainers included Foxconn Industrial Internet (4.7%), Zijin Mining Group (1.5%), CATL (1.4%) and NAURA Technology (2.8%).
