New Zealand Dollar Holds Near 11-Month Low as US Dollar Strength Offsets RBNZ Support

The New Zealand dollar remains under pressure around $0.560, close to an 11-month low, as broad US dollar strength and elevated US Treasury yields continue to outweigh improving domestic business confidence and expectations for tighter monetary policy from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The kiwi briefly moved below $0.560 in the previous session, reaching its weakest level since November 2025. Although stronger New Zealand business confidence provides some support, uncertainty surrounding the upcoming general election, elevated fuel costs and geopolitical risks continue to complicate the outlook.

Markets are increasingly focused on whether the RBNZ will deliver a rate increase later this month, with expectations currently assigning approximately a 58% probability of a 25-basis-point increase to 3.0%. A December increase is already more than fully priced into market expectations.

Kiwi Struggles Despite Stronger Business Confidence

New Zealand’s domestic business outlook has improved considerably.

A net 43% of businesses now expect general economic conditions to improve over the coming months, compared with just 8% previously.

The improvement suggests that domestic companies are becoming more optimistic about the economic outlook despite higher fuel prices and continuing geopolitical uncertainty.

However, this improvement has not yet translated into sustained strength for the New Zealand dollar.

The currency remains more heavily influenced by global factors, particularly US interest rates and the direction of the dollar.

US Dollar Strength Remains the Main Headwind

The strongest immediate pressure on NZD/USD continues to come from the US dollar.

Elevated US Treasury yields are supporting demand for the dollar by maintaining relatively attractive returns on US fixed-income assets.

This creates a difficult environment for the kiwi because even if New Zealand interest-rate expectations are becoming more hawkish, the currency can struggle when US yields remain elevated.

The next major move in NZD/USD is therefore likely to depend on the relative direction of US and New Zealand rate expectations rather than domestic confidence alone.

RBNZ Rate Expectations Provide Some Support

The outlook for New Zealand interest rates is providing an important counterweight.

Markets are pricing in around a 58% probability of a 25-basis-point RBNZ rate increase to 3.0% later this month, while a December move is already more than fully priced.

If the RBNZ delivers the expected tightening and signals that further policy support may be withdrawn, the kiwi could receive a short-term boost.

However, much of the anticipated tightening is already reflected in market pricing.

That means the currency may require a more hawkish-than-expected RBNZ message to generate a sustained recovery.

Election Uncertainty Adds to Currency Risk

The upcoming New Zealand general election is another source of uncertainty.

Political uncertainty can influence business confidence, investment decisions and expectations for future economic policy.

While the improvement in business sentiment is encouraging, investors may remain cautious until greater clarity emerges around the political environment.

This could limit the kiwi’s ability to benefit fully from stronger domestic economic expectations.

Fuel Prices Remain a Concern

Higher fuel prices are creating another challenge for New Zealand businesses and consumers.

Rising energy costs can increase operating expenses and feed into inflation, potentially complicating the RBNZ’s policy decisions.

For the currency, higher inflation can have two opposing effects.

On one side, persistent inflation could encourage tighter monetary policy and support NZD. On the other, if higher energy costs weaken household spending and economic growth, the negative growth effect could eventually outweigh the benefit of higher rates.

Bullish Scenario for NZD

The kiwi could recover if the RBNZ becomes more hawkish and US Treasury yields begin to decline.

A stronger domestic economy, improving business confidence and easing global risk pressures would further support the currency.

If the RBNZ delivers a rate increase and signals that additional tightening remains possible, markets could increase expectations for a higher terminal rate.

Under this scenario, NZD/USD could establish a base around current levels and begin a broader recovery.

Bearish Scenario for NZD

The downside scenario remains centred on continued US dollar strength.

If US Treasury yields remain elevated or rise further, the relative attraction of US dollar assets could continue to weigh on the kiwi.

Additional pressure could come from political uncertainty, higher fuel prices or renewed geopolitical concerns.

A sustained break below the current 11-month low would expose the currency to further downside and reinforce the broader bearish trend.

NZD/USD Outlook

The near-term outlook remains cautious to bearish, despite increasingly supportive domestic rate expectations.

The key issue is that RBNZ tightening expectations may already be substantially priced into the currency, while US dollar strength remains an active external headwind.

For NZD/USD to establish a durable recovery, the market likely needs to see some combination of:

  • Lower US Treasury yields
  • A weaker US dollar
  • Stronger New Zealand economic data
  • A more hawkish RBNZ
  • Reduced geopolitical risk
  • Greater political certainty

Without these developments, rallies in the kiwi could remain vulnerable to renewed selling.

Interest-Rate Differential Remains Critical

The NZD/USD relationship remains highly sensitive to interest-rate differentials.

New Zealand’s expected move towards tighter policy should theoretically provide support for the kiwi, but the effect can be diluted if US yields rise at the same time.

This makes the next series of US economic data particularly important.

A softer US inflation or employment environment could reduce Treasury yields and improve the NZD/USD outlook. Conversely, persistent US inflation or stronger economic data could reinforce the dollar and keep the kiwi under pressure.

Louis Roche Analysis

The New Zealand dollar is currently caught between improving domestic expectations and unfavourable global currency conditions.

The improvement in business confidence is significant and suggests that the domestic economic outlook is becoming less negative. The potential for RBNZ tightening also gives the kiwi a fundamental source of support.

However, markets are forward-looking, and much of the expected RBNZ tightening appears to be already priced into the currency.

The bigger issue remains the US dollar.

As long as US Treasury yields stay elevated, the kiwi may struggle to generate a sustained recovery even if New Zealand data continue improving.

I would therefore view the current level around $0.560 as an important area for the NZD/USD outlook. A stabilisation followed by a recovery would suggest that improving domestic fundamentals are beginning to regain influence. A decisive move below the recent low, however, would indicate that global dollar strength remains firmly in control.

The next RBNZ decision could provide a short-term catalyst, but the sustainability of any NZD recovery will likely depend on what happens to US yields and the broader dollar.

Coming Sessions

Markets will focus on the interaction between New Zealand monetary-policy expectations and the global dollar environment.

Key developments to watch include:

  • RBNZ interest-rate decision and guidance
  • US Treasury yields
  • US economic data
  • US Dollar Index
  • New Zealand inflation and economic activity
  • Business confidence
  • Election-related developments
  • Fuel prices
  • Global risk sentiment

A more hawkish RBNZ combined with falling US yields would create the strongest environment for a kiwi recovery. Continued US dollar strength and elevated Treasury yields would leave NZD/USD vulnerable to further downside.

Currency Hedger View

Currency Hedger views the current NZD environment as a combination of domestic improvement and significant external currency risk.

For New Zealand businesses with USD exposure, the current exchange-rate environment highlights the importance of monitoring both RBNZ policy expectations and US interest-rate developments.
