China Stocks Mixed as AI Concerns Persist

The Shanghai Composite edged down 0.1% to 3,805 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component gained 1.3% to 13,626, as investors weighed persistent US-China technology frictions. While Beijing seeks to maintain stable ties ahead of President Xi Jinping’s planned September 24 visit to Washington, reports indicate that China views some advanced US AI models, including Anthropic’s Mythos, as potential national security risks, and Washington remains concerned that Chinese firms may be leveraging leading US AI systems to develop competing models. Domestically, investors looked ahead to key economic releases, including trade and inflation data, after the central bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the economy through a moderately accommodative monetary policy, ample liquidity, and balanced credit growth. Financial stocks remained under pressure, particularly Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (-2.1%), Agricultural Bank of China (-2.5%), and China Construction Bank (-1.8%).
