Japan Leading Economic Index Revised Downward

Japan’s leading economic index, which gauges the outlook for economic activity in the months ahead using indicators such as job offers and consumer sentiment, was revised lower to 116.5 in May 2026 from 116.8 in the preliminary estimates after a final 116.1 in April, amid uncertain global conditions. Still, the latest reading was the highest level since July 2021, supported by the government’s record fiscal budget, which included comprehensive measures to ease cost-of-living pressures and emergency energy support to cushion the impact of the Middle East conflict.
