Mexican Peso Holds Near Two-Year High as Strong Mexican Data Supports MXN

Today Markets Analysis: The Mexican peso remains firmly supported near a more than two-year high against the US dollar, with improving domestic economic data providing fresh fundamental support for the currency. USD/MXN was trading near 16.98, close to the 16.91 level reached on September 4, its strongest point in more than two years.

Mexican Economic Data Strengthens the Peso

Mexico’s latest economic indicators have provided a constructive backdrop for the peso. Industrial production increased 2.7% year-on-year in July 2026, its strongest annual gain since April 2024 and comfortably above expectations for a 1.8% increase.

Gross fixed investment also rose 7.7% in June, significantly exceeding the 4.8% consensus forecast. The stronger investment and industrial-production figures suggest that domestic economic activity is proving more resilient than previously anticipated.

The improvement follows a rebound in Mexico’s economy during the second quarter, which was highlighted by Banco de México (Banxico) when it maintained its benchmark interest rate at 6.50%.

The combination of resilient activity and relatively high domestic interest rates remains supportive for the peso, particularly while international investors continue to seek attractive carry opportunities.

Fed Expectations Create a Counterweight

The peso’s advance is not without risk. The US dollar has retained support from expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in September, while US inflation remains elevated.

Core US CPI increased slightly more than expected from the previous month, while headline inflation continues to reflect the impact of higher energy costs.

A further increase in US interest rates would reduce the interest-rate differential between Mexico and the United States, potentially weakening one of the key fundamental supports for the peso.

Today Markets View

The peso remains fundamentally well positioned while Mexican economic data continues to outperform expectations and Banxico maintains a relatively restrictive monetary-policy stance.

However, USD/MXN near 16.98 leaves the peso increasingly sensitive to US monetary-policy expectations. A more hawkish Federal Reserve could trigger a reversal in the recent peso strength by narrowing the Mexico-US yield advantage.

Conversely, continued resilience in Mexican activity, stable domestic rates and sustained foreign capital inflows could allow the peso to challenge and potentially break below the 16.91 level.

“The peso continues to benefit from a combination of stronger Mexican economic data and an attractive interest-rate differential. The key question now is whether the Federal Reserve can materially change that differential without triggering a broader reassessment of emerging-market currencies.”

The peso therefore enters the coming sessions with a constructive fundamental backdrop, although the direction of US interest rates and the dollar remains the most important external variable.
