USD/CNH Rebounds as Bearish Momentum Fades, but Gains Remain Range-Bound

Today Markets Analysis: USD/CNH has rebounded sharply after briefly testing below 6.7050, with the recovery signalling that bearish momentum is beginning to fade. United Overseas Bank now sees a modest upside bias over the next one to three weeks, although gains are expected to remain contained within a defined technical range.

USD/CNH Rebounds Sharply

USD/CNH rose to 6.7153 after dipping to 6.7043, marking a significant reversal from the recent downward trend.

The move has weakened the previously bearish outlook for the US dollar against the Chinese yuan, with UOB strategists Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann noting that downward momentum has largely faded while upward momentum is beginning to build.

In the very near term, UOB expects further gains to face strong resistance around 6.7200.

Initial support is positioned at 6.7085, with the broader technical floor around 6.7040.

Bearish Momentum Loses Strength

UOB had maintained a negative USD/CNH stance since the beginning of September, previously warning that a sustained break below 6.7000 could open the way toward 6.6900.

That scenario has become less immediate following the sharp rebound.

Although USD/CNH has not yet decisively broken the 6.7160 resistance area identified by UOB, the failure to extend the decline and subsequent recovery suggest that sellers are losing control of the short-term trend.

The shift does not yet represent a clear bullish breakout. Instead, UOB expects the pair to edge higher while remaining within a 6.7040–6.7290 range over the next one to three weeks.

6.7200 Becomes the Immediate Test

The next important hurdle for USD/CNH is 6.7200.

A move through this level would strengthen the recovery and bring the upper boundary of UOB’s projected range into focus. However, repeated failure around 6.7200 could leave the pair vulnerable to another retreat toward 6.7085 and potentially 6.7040.

The key question for traders is therefore whether the recent rebound develops into sustained buying momentum or remains a corrective move within the broader range.

Key USD/CNH Levels

LevelSignificance
6.7290Upper boundary of projected range
6.7200Major near-term resistance
6.7160Strong resistance
6.7153Recent rebound high
6.7085Initial support
6.7040Key range support
6.7000Important psychological/technical level
6.6900Downside target if 6.7000 breaks decisively

Today Markets View

USD/CNH has undergone a meaningful short-term shift, with the sharp rebound reducing the strength of the previous bearish setup. However, the recovery still needs to clear 6.7200 and ultimately 6.7290 to establish a stronger bullish signal.

For now, the technical picture favours a gentle USD rebound within a broader range, rather than a decisive trend reversal.

“The important development in USD/CNH is the loss of downside momentum. The pair has recovered sharply from below 6.7050, but resistance between 6.7160 and 6.7200 needs to be overcome before the recovery can develop into a more convincing bullish move. Until then, the 6.7040–6.7290 range remains the key framework.”
