European natural gas prices steadied around €58 per MWh on Tuesday after sliding in the previous session, as traders closely watched the Middle East negotiations for signs of progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump said his latest offer of talks was Iran’s “last chance” to reach a deal and avoid large-scale air strikes. Tehran, however, denied holding talks with Washington, though it said discussions with Oman aimed at facilitating shipping through the strategic waterway were making progress. The conflict has disrupted roughly one-fifth of global LNG supply, intensifying competition between European and Asian buyers for cargoes and hampering Europe’s efforts to rebuild gas inventories ahead of winter. As a result, European gas storage levels have fallen to their lowest for this time of year in nearly two decades, heightening concerns over the region’s gas supply security as the heating season draws closer.
