TSX Futures Edge Lower After CPI

Futures tracking Canadian stocks edged lower on Monday following the release of CPI data, after the S&P/TSX Composite Index reached a record high on Friday. Canada’s headline inflation rose 3.0%, just above forecasts of 2.9%. Core inflation measures tracked by the Bank of Canada also edged higher, largely reinforcing expectations that the central bank will keep interest rates unchanged this year. On the geopolitical front, tensions in the Middle East persisted, with little sign of a near-term resolution. Inflationary pressures increased amid higher oil prices, weighing on financials and the broader index. July’s inflation report also showed fuel prices rising at a faster pace. Elsewhere, Abaxx Technologies’ net loss widened in the second quarter. OceanaGold plans to acquire Ausgold in a deal valued at A$776 million. Canada and the US remain far from reaching a draft trade deal despite regular meetings, Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told an advisory committee on Friday.
